The Responsible Jewellery Council has re-certified jewellery giant Pandora after deciding the firm continues to live up to standards covering human rights, labour rights, environmental impact, mining practices and product disclosure.
The company achieved certification against the 2013 Code of Practices (COP) set down by the RJC to assess ethical and social practices.
In order to be certified, 120 aspects are placed under scrutiny ranging from the sourcing of raw materials through to the sale of finished jewellery to customers.
Pandora was especially commended on their good working conditions, responsible sourcing of jewellery materials, and initiatives that give back to the local community.
“The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) is delighted to congratulate Pandora on its certification,” says RJC executive director, Andrew Bone. “Since it joined the RJC in 2012, Pandora has been an active participant in our organisation’s efforts to define and shape the standards for our industry. It is commendable to see their efforts in good working conditions, responsible sourcing of jewellery materials, and community initiatives that give back to the local community.”
The RJC is a not-for-profit standards setting organisation dedicated to developing and implementing responsible business practices and standards across the jewellery supply chain.
Up until 2017, Pandora held a seat in the RJC executive committee and assumed the role of chairman in the RJC Standards Setting Committee, which comprises industry representatives, experts and leading civil society organisations.
In 2017, the Standards Setting Committee finalised the revision of the RJC Chain-of-Custody Standard for gold, providing responsible brands with the opportunity to source gold that has been independently audited and certified to come from responsible sourcing. Also in 2017, under the chairmanship of Pandora the Standards Setting Committee initiated the revision of the RJC Code-of-Practices standard against which all RJC members must undergo a thorough independent audit and certification. RJC will expand its material scope to also include silver and coloured gemstones.
