GJEPC Advocates for Specialised HS Codes for Indian GI Products at Stakeholder Meet in Delhi

GJEPC attended a stakeholder consultation meeting on 28th August, 2024, at Vanija Bhavan, New Delhi, to discuss the implementation, benefits, potential and challenges involved in introducing Geographical Indication (GI) specialised identifiers for existing Harmonized System (HS) codes for Indian GI products.

The meeting, chaired by Dr. Himani Pande, IAS, Additional Secretary of the Department of Promotion of Industry & International Trade (DPIIT), brought together senior officials from Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and stakeholders across various commodities. GJEPC played a pivotal role in advocating for the implementation of GI in HS codes and highlighting its potential benefits. Mr. Siddhartha, COO, GJEPC, and Mr. Kaushik Ghosh, Assistant Director – Kolkata, GJEPC, represented the organisation at the meeting.

In addition to the consultation, GJEPC senior officials met with Mr. Amardeep Singh Bhatia, IAS, Secretary, DPIIT, to discuss the India Jewellery Park Mumbai (IJPM) project and seek support for the Gati Shakti initiative. Mr. Bhatia assured full cooperation and support from his office and acknowledged the advantages of upgraded HS codes for Indian GI products.
