Gemfields Temporarily Suspends Kagem Mining Amid Strategic Restructuring

Gemfields Group Limited, a leading player in the colored gemstone sector, has initiated a series of cost-cutting measures to address pressing challenges affecting its operations and revenues.

The company reported that recent emerald and ruby auctions underperformed due to an oversupply of Zambian emeralds at reduced prices, a decline in premium ruby production, subdued demand in the luxury market, and political unrest in Mozambique.

In response, Gemfields has temporarily suspended mining activities at its Kagem emerald mine in Zambia for up to six months. Additionally, the company is halting non-essential expenditures and deferring planned capital investments at its ruby projects in Mozambique. Other measures include the planned sale of its Nairoto gold project and a strategic review of Fabergé, its renowned luxury brand. Targeted operational streamlining is also underway across the company.

Despite these challenges, Gemfields remains optimistic that these actions will stabilize its operations. The company is prioritizing the completion of its second ruby processing plant at Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada in Mozambique, which is projected to be operational by mid-2025.

These adjustments reflect Gemfields’ commitment to navigating turbulent market conditions while maintaining its leadership in the gemstone industry.
