Birmingham-based auctioneer Fellows has broken its own records with the sale of a Graff fancy yellow diamond ring for more than £1.3 million.
After furious bidding across two phone lines and in the room, the hammer went down at £1.1M for the 43.59ct fancy interne yellow radiant-cut VS2 diamond ring. Including buyer’s premium at 23% (plus VAT), it sold for £1,307,600.
According to Fellows, this beats its own in-house records and represents the top price in the UK for a regional auction house in 2017. This is also thought to be the first seven-figure bid from a regional saleroom since 2012.
A spokesperson for the auction house, Alexandra Whittaker comments: “We are delighted with this result. It was a privilege to sell such an important jewel here in Birmingham’s historic and world renowned Jewellery Quarter”.
“To date, the Graff Fancy Yellow Diamond ring is the most important and the most expensive item to sell at the in our 141 year history. This is not only great news for us but also the Jewellery Quarter as it shines a spotlight on the roaring jewellery trade that is happening outside London.”
Fellows’ next fine jewellery auction will take place on January 18 2018, in the Birmingham saleroom.
