“Consumers are looking for experiences that jewellers can deliver”

As we gear up for another edition of International Jewellery London, I can’t believe the time to descend on Olympia has come around so quickly again.

It’s been a whirlwind 12 months. A lot has happened in the UK, and the industry has been on quite a journey as well.

Managing directors of leading brands have stepped down, and new suitors have taken up the roles, department stores have announced significant closures, while a handful of independents have shut their shutters quietly.

If you talk to many people in the industry you would be forgiven for thinking everything is all doom and gloom. Whenever I go around trade shows or networking events, sometimes negative comments are all I hear. But, call me an optimist or a fool, I just don’t believe everything is as bad as it seems.

Trade is certainly hard, but it’s not impossible, and this industry has the tools to get through somewhat harder times.

Consumers are looking for experiences, and jewellers can deliver one.

Buying jewellery can be memorable. Whether looking for an engagement ring to cherish for life, or a bracelet to mark a special occasion, nine times out of ten people buy jewellery for an emotional reason, and that’s what sets this industry apart.

The time has come to take stock and consider what you want to put in your windows to drive business during the lucrative Christmas trading season.

What do you want to put centre stage? What brands can you make some room for? Do you need to find something that is different, unique, and exclusively yours in the region you trade in?

Make this trade show count.

Don’t just see old friends, or say hello to your existing suppliers, make sure you walk the halls with eyes wide open. You never know what you might miss if you don’t.

Being at International Jewellery London gives you an advantage to discover emerging designers, up and coming brands, and leading suppliers that could transform your business. I for one am excited to see the wonders waiting in each hall.

And if you don’t believe me that this industry is still thriving, come join us at the Professional Jeweller Awards where we will be celebrating the trade’s achievements over the last 12 months.

Network with the leading lights in the UK jewellery industry and discover how even during uncertain times many retailers and suppliers are preparing for a very bright, and long, future.

It’s going to be a night to remember. I look forward to seeing you there.
