Currently, there is a lack of regulation governing gem laboratories in many countries. This can pose risks to both the industry and consumers. The CIBJO Gemmological Commission aims to address this issue by establishing clear guidelines for gem labs.
The Blue Book aligns with ISO 17025, an international standard for testing and calibration laboratories. However, it goes beyond this by providing specific methodologies and standards tailored to the gemstone and jewellery industries.
The report outlines the essential requirements for establishing a reliable and responsible gem lab, including management practices, technical formalities, and ensuring independence and impartiality. It also details the various factors that contribute to the accuracy and reliability of gem testing and grading.
The Gemmological Commission plans to discuss the possibility of creating a mechanism to recognise laboratories that comply with the Blue Book standards. This could involve issuing a “CIBJO Acknowledgement of Gemmological Laboratories” and listing them alongside other recognised bodies. Such a registry could help consumers and industry professionals identify reputable gem labs.
However, it’s important to note that the recognition does not imply any verification or endorsement of specific results by CIBJO. The individual laboratories remain responsible for their activities.
