A platinum and gold Cartier “India” tutti frutti necklace sold for $8.7m at Christie’s Hong Kong – way above its $4.9m high estimate.

It was the highlight of the Magnificent Jewels sale, which realized a total of $61m and achieved a 127 per cent hammer price against pre-sale estimates.

The auction house said more than half the lots sold above their high estimates.

The necklace was made of carved rubies, emeralds and sapphires, round diamonds (0.63 to 0.60 carat, D to E color, VVS2 to VS1 clarity), sapphire, ruby and emeralds beads. It was signed Cartier, with the maker’s mark and number.

Christie’s said it sold “after over 10 minutes of competitive bidding”. The original estimate was $3.6m to $4.9m.
