A sensational gift for December birthdays

For December birthday celebrators—and really, anyone who is mesmerized by this gemstone’s hue (not hard to be)—I love this recent find from colored gemstone specialist Akiva Gil. As it’s easy for me to often confuse tanzanite and sapphire (especially in photos), I think the pairing of the two gemstones—the cushion-cut tanzanite center and its tiny sapphire side stones—is quite clever. They complement each another beautifully, yet also demonstrate their slight contrast well as they help to bring out the subtle purple hue of that center stone. The round sapphires, set within off-center square frames, bring a delightfully Deco-esque touch to an otherwise modern design, and the twist of diamonds on the band is a playful addition. With a center stone over 6 cts., it’s no small look, but it could easily be worn as a favorite everyday piece, or even, for those nontraditionalists, as an engagement ring.

Cushion ring in 18k white gold with 6.17 ct. tanzanite, 0.08 ct. t.w. sapphires, and 0.61 ct. t.w. diamonds, $10,000
