A bride-to-be called the wedding off after learning that her “$50,000 diamond ring” was a lab grown.
Her sister, who is a jeweler, cleaned and polished the ring for her as a favor and noticed it was made of “cheap materials” and determined that the diamond was not natural.
The bride-to-be, named only as Lydia, and her husband-to-be, called Seth, had been bragging to all their friends about the very expensive diamond, according to Brides magazine, which picked up the story from the Reddit social network.
The sister, Katie, broke the news to Lydia that it was “worth no more than $30”. Her first reaction was that Seth must have been duped.
But he admitted he knowingly bought a bargain basement sparkler. “She’s just very upset that Seth lied to her,” said Katie in a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A_” section.
No details of either the natural diamond or the lab grown were provided.
