Former Tiffany & Co design director, Francesca Amfitheatrof, has joined Louis Vuitton as artistic director of watches and jewellery.

Amfitheatrof will be charged with creating jewellery and high jewellery collections, alongside overseeing all of Louis Vuitton’s watch designs.

Talking to fashion industry trade journal, WWD, about the move Amfitheatrof says: “It is with great excitement that I join Louis Vuitton, a house I feel deeply connected to through its values of craftsmanship and travel.”

Tokyo-born Amfiteatr of is a London Central Saint Martins graduate who became the first woman to head the jewellery design team at Tiffany five years ago. She left the brand at the beginning of last year.

Prior to Tiffany’s, the acclaimed designer developed jewellery collections for luxury fashion brands such as Chanel, Fendi and Marni, as has sold her own collections internationally through the galleries and shops including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and destination Parisian boutique Colette.

Reports from the fashion press said that Louis Vuitton had hired someone renowned for her “streamlined aesthetic, creativity and her work with precious metals”.

First quarter results published last week revealed that global watch and jewellery sales rose by 20% to €959 million for LVMH Maisons on a constant currency and like-for-like store basis.

The strength of the euro and other adjustments reduced the reported growth to 9% for the quarter from brands including TAG Heuer, Hublot, Bulgari, Chaumet and Zenith.
