The Gem and Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI) has launched its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Goldsmith Program in West Bengal in association with Edujobs Academy, Kolkata. The programme will help with the certification of skill levels of over 8,000 jewellery karigars working in the unorganised sector in the state.
The inauguration of the RPL programme for the state took place in the presence of Shri. Sadhan Pande, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Self Help-Group and Self-Employment, Government of India, Smt. Smita Bakshi, member of West Bengal, Legislative Assembly, Government of West Bengal and Shri. Binit Bhatt, C.E.O, GJSCI.
The RPL programme aims to certify skilled and semi-skilled karigars based on their identified previous learnings, experience and talent, and then securing a formal qualification. It is a step towards bringing the estimated 3.5 million skilled people working in the industry into a more organised environment while providing them with more stable employment and income. Since the RPL was launched, GJSCI has trained more than 80,000 candidates and certified over 20,000 more. It has a target of training a further 2.7 million individuals.
