Fulham Road jeweller Theo Fennell has announced the winners of its 16th annual Royal College of Art (RCA) awards.
The awards ceremony is traditionally held at the RCA itself, but 2020 marked the first year the event was held online.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the students were tasked with virtually presenting their designs to Fennell.
Each student was given only a few minutes to talk through their inspirations, year’s work and final piece.
Gerry Suen won the ‘Overall Excellence’ award; Roxanne Simone was recognised for ‘Best Work in Metal’; and Lara Hirst for ‘Best Work in Jewellery’.
They each receive a silver dish crafted and engraved by hand in the Theo Fennell workshop, along with a cash prize.
As a leader in his field, Fennell is passionate about promoting and nurturing young talent and actively supports the future of the British jewellery and silversmithing industries, as demonstrated through his longstanding partnership with the RCA.
He commented: “It was fascinating to view the work online rather than in the flesh but all the students had produced an incredibly polished presentation given the circumstances and talked about their work with great passion.
“It is a delight still to be able to award these prizes, despite the situation, to the stars of tomorrow. Gearry, Roxanne and Lara are more than worthy winners and I hope the prizes are a help to them in these strange times.”
