Chameleon diamonds to lead Bonhams HK sale

A diamond necklace featuring nine chameleon diamonds with a total weight of 13.87 carats is headlining the Rare Jewels and Jadeite sale at Bonhams Hong Kong on November 25.

The piece is expected to fetch between HK$1,600,000 and HK$3,000,000 (around US$204,000 and US$380,000).

“Chameleon diamonds are among the rarest and most mysterious of fancy colour diamonds. Depending on temperature and light conditions, the diamond’s colour transforms from ‘olive’ green to a mesmerising brownish yellow or yellow,” explained Bonhams Asia Director of Jewelry, Graeme Thompson.

He added, “Due to their rarity, little gemmological information exists on chameleon diamonds and scientists have yet to confirm the mechanism that causes their colour-changing behaviour.”

Alongside this piece, the Hong Kong sale features a range of top-quality diamonds, coloured gemstones, and signed jewellery. There are more than 150 lots with price estimates ranging from HK$30,000 (about US$3,800) for a cultured pearl and diamond necklace, to HK$7,500,000 (around US$956,000) for a fine jade bangle.
